Ten holiday trends to watch this year

NRF has released its list of ten holiday trends to watch. Among them: Americans don’t believe the recession is over, sales and promotions are king, and gift cards still reign as the most popular gift to receive.

The most interesting trend for the online folks is likely this one:

#8: When looking at store sales, consider the Internet. The web will influence one in three holiday purchases this year, and retailers are using the Internet not only as a sales channel but also as a marketing vehicle. (Those of you at the Shop.org Summit who heard Terry Lundgren’s keynote got a first-hand account of how this happens at Macy’s.) Keep an eye out for Shop.org’s eHoliday survey, which will provide more insight on how people will to shop online this holiday season as well as what online retailers are planning. Hint: hello, social media!

Other holiday-related items that might be appealing:

  • A short video of how different shoppers plan to compensate for the economy this holiday season
  • Audio from the briefing, if you have 45 minutes to listen to the complete Top 10 rundown
  • NRF’s first holiday survey, which outlines shoppers’ holiday plans

I also think the comparison shopping search engine will influence the decisions of many savvy shoppers. There is a huge trend by many shoppers to focus on best prices and merchants on deals and discounts.
