Hi Fiona, I agree with you. social media are not only useful for striking up relationships with friends and classmates, they have become a very important source of possible customers for companies. in fact, the company where I work has created some social media profiles (in facebook, myspace an twitter) in order to reach those customers or just to make others know what we do, and I have to say that people are really interested in us. if you aske me I'd reccomend to create an official company profile, specially in facebook, it's truly a good way to get new customers. however you have to take into account that those sites are very concerned about advertising and spam, but if the enterprise has a natural and personalized interaction with people it could work very well.
thanks for sharing this info with us.

Great data and insight, Fiona. Thanks for sharing. Is this the first time you've run this survey? If not, I'd love to know the percentage who followed retailers last time. If it is the first time you've run this survey, the "follow retailers" choice might be a good metric to baseline for future reference. I wonder if it will grow now that Facebook has made following retailers easier and now that retailers are starting to create more meaningful experiences on Facebook. Retailers like American Eagle Outfitters, Target, Borders, Moosejaw, Urban Outfitters, Gap, REI and others doing some interesting things on Facebook, and it seems like these retailer pages are starting to catch on. Will they all create experiences interesting enough that people will want to follow them as much as they want to connect with friends?
